Comic Con @Home – What We Do In The Shadows Panel!

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

As Comic Con @Home continues, we move on to what many people consider to be the best comedy on TV today, What We Do In The Shadows! The documentary style series follows in the footsteps of Taika Waititi's film, focusing on the home lives of four vampires and their loyal familiar Guillermo. The panel consisted of Matt Berry, Natasia Demetriou, Kayvan Novak, Mark Proksch, and Harvey Guillén–and executive producers for the series, Paul Simms and Stefani Robinson, and was hosted by one time guest star, Haley Joel Osment! You can check out the whole panel below, but here are some of the highlights!

  • Osment talks about the evolution of Guillermo. Guillén says that no one expected the twist at the end of season 1, including him. He's really enjoying playing the character being torn between his desire to be a vampire, but his destiny to be a vampire killer.
  • Novak talks about Guillermo, and his dysfunctional relationship with Nandor. Nandor is realizing how badly he needs him, because Guillermo is the only one that listens to him, but says Nandor will be very concerned about keeping a vampire killer in the house.
  • The show has been greenlit for a third season. The producers are very excited to say that while  they know exactly what’s going to happen, they can't share any of it.
  • Natasia reveals that she had to do the voiceover for puppet Natasha in while she was in lockdown. Osment points out that most of the cast had to do their ADR from home in quarantine.
  • They discuss the Mark Hamill cameo. They found out he would be in the episode with enough time to write his character specifically for him. Stunt coordinators convinced Hamill to act out the lightsaber moves with pool cues, and everyone on set that day watched in childish amazement. Matt Berry discusses being in front of Luke Skywalker, he felt taken out of character, like a seven year old again.
  • Osment states the location for the show is genuinely cold. Shot at night in in the winter in Toronto, the snow in each episode is all real. Producers talk about how grueling the show is, and that they genuinely don’t see the sun during an entire seasons production.
  • Osment asks about how they've been during the start of Covid-19, Paul and Stefani discuss the difficulties of having to do all of post production remotely and apart.
  • As far as teases for season 3, Paul and Stefani explain that all of the characters will get a chance to dive into what they’re searching for. Nandor is lonely, and he may find love. Colin doesn’t know how he became an energy vampire, so they will explore that, then Paul stops himself before he gives any more away.
  • When asked for one more tease, Paul confirms that after the vampires fear for their safety, they will get a hellhound for protection.
