Cosmetic: James Wan, Ingrid Bisu team with R.H. Norman & Micheline Pitt for body horror film

Last year, James Wan and his wife Ingrid Bisu crafted the wonderfully bonkers Malignant with screenwriter Akela Cooper. Now Wan and Bisu have come up with the story for a body horror movie that will be called Cosmetic, and the married filmmaking duo of R. H. Norman and Micheline Pitt have signed on to flesh their idea out into a screenplay. Norman and Pitt will also be directing the film.

Screen Gems has acquired Cosmetic, which will be produced by Wan and Michael Clear through their company Atomic Monster. Bisu and Atomic Monster’s Judson Scott will serve as executive producers. Scott Strauss and Michael Bitar are overseeing the project for Screen Gems.

Deadline reports that Cosmetic is set in

the beauty industry, colliding the worlds of glamour and body horror in a supernatural tale of one girl’s deadly pursuit of perfection.

If you’re not familiar with the works of Norman and Pitt, Deadline also has some background information on them:

Norman & Pitt are a married writing-directing team. Pitt is a writer, director, designer, artist, animator, and advocate who is the founder and creative director of two multimillion dollar fashion companies and also an advocate for sexual assault survivors as a member of RAINN’s National Leadership Council. She teamed with Norman to write and direct Grummy, a dark fairy tale based on her own childhood assault survival story. Norman directed the short films Gusano and Afghanistan War short, Hajji.

I recognized the filmmakers’ names because we reported on their short film Grummy when it was submitted for Oscar consideration last year. It wasn’t nominated, but that was a great short. I know a lot of genre fans are going to be sold on checking out Cosmetic as soon as they hear that Wan is involved – and after watching Malignant, I’m definitely looking forward to seeing what Wan and Bisu have come up with this time around.
