Could Karen Gillan’s Guardians of the Galaxy villain be the creation of Todd McFarlane and Neil Gaiman?

Stick with me here because this is going to be complicated.

When Karen Gillan was announced as joining the cast of GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY as the “lead female villain” we had no idea who it could be. Now a strong rumor suggests that not only is the character someone new to the world of Marvel but it is in fact a character created for a totally different superhero in a non-Marvel title. That character is Angela from Todd McFarlane‘s Spawn comics.

To understand how the character went from Spawn to Guardians, check out this nice recap from ScreenRant:

A recent deal between Gaiman and Marvel will introduce Angela to the Marvel comic book universe during the 2013 crossover event “Age of Ultron.” This is only after a lengthy legal battle between Gaiman and McFarlane, which resulted in a 2012 settlement regarding character copyrights. Angela has already been slated to join Brian Michael Bendis’ relaunch of Guardians of the Galaxy – which is not-so-coincidentally being tailored to fit with the 2014 summer blockbuster by Super director James Gunn. We already know that Gillan is set to play the main villain of the film, and Angela – a bounty hunter on the Guardians’ trail – could certainly fit that bill.

In the Spawn comics, Angela is an angel/bounty hunter who is tasked with hunting down and killing Spawn. For the Marvel introduction, the angel background may be changed to something more alien in origin, but the visual design of the character will remain largely intact. This would definitely be a nice role for the DOCTOR WHO redhead despite her claims that she doesn’t work out in the gym very often in the source article that started this rumor going.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY starring Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Benicio Del Toro, Karen Gillan, Lee Pace, John C. Reilly, Michael Rooker, Zoe Saldana, Glenn Close, and more opens August 1, 2014.
