The Friday the 13th prequel series Crystal Lake has finally brought viewers back to Camp Crystal Lake, and Peacock is offering a closer look at the practical effects that helped make the show’s bloodshed possible. The streaming service has released an 8-minute, 50-second behind-the-scenes video titled Bringing Death to Life with Practical Special Effects, showcasing some of the work that went into the series’ kills and Jason Voorhees’ makeup and prosthetics.

Warning: The video contains spoilers for Crystal Lake. If you’ve already watched the eight-episode first season, however, this is an opportunity to see more of the craftsmanship behind its nastier moments. Check it out in the embed above!

Crystal Lake Goes Behind the Scenes of Its Effects

The new video takes viewers behind the scenes of Crystal Lake to explore how the production created some of its gruesome kills using practical special effects. It also examines the makeup and prosthetics used to bring young Jason Voorhees to the screen.

The prequel stars Linda Cardellini as Pamela Voorhees, the role originally played by Betsy Palmer in the 1980 Friday the 13th. Callum Vinson plays Jason as a young boy, long before he becomes the hockey-mask-wearing slasher icon familiar to horror fans. Crystal Lake explores his childhood and his relationship with Pamela, including the events surrounding his drowning and the tragedy that changes both their lives.

The production’s makeup and prosthetic work helps bring that younger version of Jason to life. As previously discussed by creator and showrunner Brad Caleb Kane, the character’s transformation involved substantial makeup work, with Vinson wearing pounds of makeup during production.

Crystal Lake Brings Friday the 13th Back to Camp

The eight-episode first season of Crystal Lake brings the Friday the 13th franchise to television, with Cardellini leading a cast that also includes Vinson, William Catlett, Devin Kessler, Cameron Scoggins, and Gwendolyn Sundstrom. The series returns to the world established by the original 1980 film while expanding the lives of Pamela, Jason, and the residents of the surrounding town. It also brings back familiar characters, including Officer Dorf and Crazy Ralph, and revisits locations associated with the original movie.

In my review of the complete first season, I praised Cardellini’s performance as Pamela, the show’s use of familiar locations and characters, and its affection for the original film. I also noted that some of its mythology changes may divide longtime fans. Still, the series delivers plenty of the bloody mayhem audiences expect from Friday the 13th. Will Crystal Lake Get a Season 2?

A second season has not been confirmed, but Kane has already discussed ideas for continuing the story. He has expressed interest in exploring more of the town’s residents, potentially giving the series a “Twin Peaks-y” atmosphere while keeping Pamela and Jason at the center of the narrative.

For now, fans can revisit the first season on Peacock and take a closer look at the FX work that brought its violence to life in the behind-the-scenes video above.
