A couple of years ago, Curry Barker wrote, directed, and starred in the found footage horror movie Milk & Serial, which is said to have had a budget of $800. Baker then released the movie through YouTube, where the free-to-watch video has racked up more than 3 million views. Even though he already made Milk & Serial, it’s his new horror movie, Obsession, that has been billed as his feature directorial debut – and it has turned out to be a massive box office success. Closing in on $200 million at the domestic box office and a $300 million worldwide total, Obsession is now the most successful festival acquisition ever – but while Barker has ideas for expanding the franchise (he has even talked about turning the concept into an anthology), he doesn’t want Obsession 2 to be the next movie he makes.
Barker has already made another feature, he’s in post-production on a project called Anything but Ghosts, but he tells The Hollywood Reporter that he hasn’t decided what he wants to do next. He just doesn’t want it to be an Obsession sequel.
What is Obsession about?
Starring Michael Johnston and Inde Navarrette, Obsession is a story about a hopeless romantic who makes a wish that his long-time crush falls in love with him. A sinister enchantment ensues. Here’s the official synopsis: After breaking the mysterious “One Wish Willow” to win his crush’s heart, a hopeless romantic finds himself getting exactly what he asked for but soon discovers that some desires come at a dark, sinister price. Cooper Tomlinson, Megan Lawless, and Andy Richter are also in the cast.
James Harris of Teashop Productions produced the film with Haley Nicole Johnson of Under the Shell, Christian Mercuri of Capstone Pictures, and Roman Viaris. Blum’s fellow executive producers are Leonora Darby (Teashop), Mark Lane (Teashop), David Haring (Capstone), and Ruzanna Kegeyan (Capstone Pictures).
What did Curry Barker say about Obsession 2?
Barker told The Hollywood Reporter, “The big conversation is: Do I want to do an IP movie? Or do I want to do my original? I have an idea for my original, but I have so many ideas for Chainsaw as well. I have a lot to weigh and that’s where the stress really comes from. I don’t know what to do next. I don’t want to go straight into Obsession 2. I have such a cool idea for it that I won’t say. I’m not saying it has to be five, six years from now. But I think people would be just as excited for it if it came a little down the road. It’s a whirlwind and I’m trying to figure it out.“
As he mentions there, he has also been hired to write and direct a new Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie. There’s also talk of expanding on Milk & Serial. That is “probably going to happen. I wonder if there’s an opportunity to bring somebody else onto Milk & Serial and I’ll produce but not necessarily direct.“
