Dante gets special

Yep, Dante's a bad mutha.

If I could take a picture of my TV, you’d see a hole shaped like a PlayStation 2 controller in the screen. That’s from Devil May Cry 3, or more accurately, me after dying for the 51st time on the same level for the last hour. Of course I’m kidding about the whole hole thing (sorry), but be prepared, since you’ll be feeling like doing that after a while playing the game.

Gamespot reported earlier that Capcom is re-releasing the demon-hunting ass-kicker Devil May Cry 3 for the PlayStation 2 under Sony’s Greatest Hits lineup January 24th for $19.95. This time, like Silent Hill 2 and Virtua Fighter 4 before it, DMC 3 is getting the Special Edition treatment. Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening Special Edition takes the original Devil May Cry 3 and adds a bevy of new features, most notable among them is the ability to play as series protagonist Dante’s evil twin brother, Vergil, with his own Dark Slayer fighting style. The rerelease also features a new boss character, a turbo option to speed the game up by 20 percent, a new continue system, adjusted difficulty levels (with a new “very hard” mode), and survival and movie modes. All this for only $20. Mow the lawn twice, and it’s yours.

Personally, I liked the original Devil May Cry (also a Greatest Hits release, though no changes) better than the second and third games in the series. Dante was a wise-cracking badass and had the goods to back it up in the first one, and he still is in the second and third games, though he’s silent for the most part in the disappointing first sequel, and comes off as overracting in DMC 3. Plus DMC 3 rivals Ninja Gaiden, Shinobi and Nightshade as the most difficult console game currently on the market, to the point you throw your controller at the TV in frustration. But the game is a good investment overall, since it carries a wealth of cool extras (making of footage, extra modes, more costumes), and with the addition of the above features, you’ll be getting a lot for just 20 bucks. Just remember to slug down some Pepto before playing.
