Although it was a little sad, not to mention surprising, when Tim Miller stepped away from the sequel to DEADPOOL last week, the director isn't about to sit around feeling sorry for himself as he has already begun work on his next project, a hybrid live-action/animated family film featuring Sonic the Hedgehog.

Per THR, Tim Miller and his longtime Blur Studio collaborator Jeff Fowler have been tapped by Sony Pictures to work on the Sonic the Hedgehog adaptation on which Fowler will make his feature directorial debut. The project was announced back in February when Sony said that they were keen to "expand our business into other entertainment areas beyond what we are currently involved." My experience with Sonic the Hedgehog pretty much begins and ends with the first Sega Genesis game; as I recall, I sucked at anything beyond the first few stages but always had a blast playing it. Would Sonic the Hedgehog make for a compelling film? I'll leave that up to those of you who know more about the character and his colourful assortment of friends and enemies than I. Of Jeff Fowler, Miller had this to say:

Jeff is an incredible director with strong story instincts. The world of Sonic presents the perfect opportunity for him to leverage his experience in animation to bring new dimension to this iconic character.

No word on when Sonic the Hedgehog might hit theaters, but Sony's statement earlier this year said that they were aiming for a 2018 release. As for DEADPOOL 2, no director has been announced just yet but the word on the street is that JOHN WICK co-director David Leitch is the front-runner for the position.
