Today seems to be Japanese manga-kinda day, huh? First GHOST IN THE SHELL, now DEATH NOTE.
Before I get into the actual news, let me tell you all about DEATH NOTE. It’s a Japanese manga written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata. It centers around a high school student who discovers a supernatural notebook that allows him to kill anyone by writing the victim’s name and picturing his or her face. The plot follows his attempt to create and lead a world cleansed of evil using the book, and the complex conflict between himself and those assailing him that results.
That’s a whole lot to put on a high school boy… but it sounds good to me. Now this manga has been adapted into two live-action feature films. Understandably, these flicks were made over in Japan, but today Anime News Network dropped word that Viz Pictures will be screening these flicks here in the US!
Mind you this is no wide release, or even a week long release for that matter. Viz Pictures will be screening DEATH NOTE in over 300 theaters throughout America through National CineMedia’s NCM Fathom. The dates this will be dropping are May 20 and May 21.
The second flick is also set to screen across America, but those dates haven’t been released yet. Both films are written and directed by Shusuke Kaneko. The first film stars Tatsuya Fujiwara, Kenichi Matsuyama, and Erika Toda. Below you can see Kipi-san acting out character Misa Amane from DEATH NOTE… looking pretty damn good!
