So is Johnny Depp ever going to get around to making that DARK SHADOWS movie? Who the hell knows, but today we’ve got a couple interesting updates for you all regarding the project.
First let me give you a bit of backstory. DARK SHADOWS is a soap opera from back in the day that centered on vampires. It also had witches, ghouls, werewolves, and the like. The man who’s safely tucked away in all our fantasies (admit it…) Johnny Depp expressed interest in bringing to life a big screen version of SHADOWS over a year ago… with nothing to show for it. Then a few months ago word dropped that frequent Depp buddies Tim Burton and John August were in line to direct and write SHADOWS, respectively.
Well Entertainment Weekly recently threw up an article where they mentioned DARK SHADOWS, here’s that excerpt: Two long-discussed Depp projects appear kaput for now: Shantaram, based on a novel about a heroin addict’s adventures in India, and the movie version of the ’60s vampire soap Dark Shadows, a childhood favorite of the actor’s. Well that’s no surprise seeing how Depp has a slew of movies lined up, including THE LONE RANGER, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 4, and ALICE IN WONDERLAND.
Well Tim Burton sees otherwise according to an article from the LA Times. When asked about DARK SHADOWS, Burton responded: “Oh I don’t know. Take one at time, you know? It’s something I’m interested in of course. Definitely. But I’m going to start shooting this one first!” By the way, in that same article Tim Burton speaks about a bunch of other things, including ALICE IN WONDERLAND and THE DARK KNIGHT. So what do you think? I’m going to go ahead and assume that’s Burton just making small talk. Realistically when you look at the slate of Burton and Depp, it’s hard to see a spot where they can fit in DARK SHADOWS, especially if the rumors are true about Burton being interested in PIRATES 4. But if anyone can do it, it’s them. Especially seeing how these two are a bit out there and love making their dream projects come to life. Then again… is DARK SHADOWS really down Burton’s alley? I’m just not getting that ‘perfect fit’ vibe. I guess we shall see… hopefully.
