Designs from abandoned Mad Max anime by artist Mahiro Maeda

Mad Max: Fury Road George Miller Tom Hardy Charlize Theron Banner

As most of you probably know, director George Miller was going to do an anime movie based on Charlize Theron's Furiosa character before MAD MAX: FURY ROAD was delayed for a second time (due to getting rained out of Australia), and some designs from the aborted project have surfaced online, thanks to Crunchyroll and a Japanese television show.

The designs were created by artist Mahiro Maeda (Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo, the animation sequence in Quentin Tarantino's KILL BILL VOLUME 1) and were reportedly used as inspiration for MAD MAX: FURY ROAD. George Miller co-wrote the script for the anime film with Nico Lathouris, and last month Miller said it would have been "more Furiosa’s story and how she came about." Below you'll find Mahiro Maeda's designs, as well as the (untranslated) Japanese TV report. What are your thoughts on this artwork for the abandoned project?

George Miller has promised there will be more Mad Max, starting with MAD MAX: THE WASTELAND, and hopefully we won't have to wait another thirty years for the FURY ROAD follow-up.
