Well this is coming out of left field. First we had THE WOLFMAN rebooted, then there’s the ongoing talks regarding THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON. But THE MUMMY? Since when were we talking about rebooting that paper mached bastard?!
Hell the last MUMMY talk we had came back in August 2008, when we heard rumblings of a fourth Brendan Fraser-Mummy flick. Well it’s taken almost two years, but it seems we’ve got that Egyptian badass coming at us once again! According to the LA Times, Dimension Films are planning on rebooting the classic Universal Monster with THE MUMMY ARCHIVES, which is described as ‘a more artful and modestly budgeted version’ then we’re used to with the Fraser franchise. Well damn… but that’s not all!
It seems Dimension already have their eyes on a director as well: Spain’s Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego! The international director, who turned heads with 2007’s KING OF THE HILL, is in talks to write and direct the feature. Douglas Wick is looking to produce the film through his Red Wagon Entertainment banner. Apparently THE MUMMY ARCHIVES will go a little something like this:
The film will focus on several young people who are haunted by a mummy curse, with the action playing out very much in the unseen realm, as both the audience and the characters frequently experience the effects of the curse without seeing it explicitly.
Now even though it’s said THE MUMMY ARCHIVES will be following along in PARANORMAL ACTIVITY’s low-budget footsteps, it’s scored a budget of $5 million so we’re not talking micro-budget.
