Sam Raimi has been a pretty busy guy lately. Ever since the man finished DRAG ME TO HELL he’s been playing a game of hopscotch as to which project he’ll be tackling next. First the talented filmmaker was on board to direct the latest installment of SPIDER-MAN when the studo decided it would rather opt for a reboot of the franchise rather than another sequel. Alright then, so what’s next for Raimi?
Well last we heard he was gearing up to direct the WORLD OF WARCRAFT flick he was working on but apparently he may have his eyes set on yet another project. According to Variety Raimi seems to be the main guy Disney are pursuing for the upcoming WIZARD OF OZ prequel OZ, THE GREAT AND POWERFUL. Hoping to bank off of ALICE IN WONDERLAND’s huge success, Disney are looking to get OZ going as soon as possible and would love nothing more than to have Raimi sitting in the director’s chair. Mind you Raimi is only circling the project for now, no deal have been made just yet.
The project, based upon the 1939 classic film, tells the story of a circus wrangler who is transported via tornado to the mysterious land of Oz, where he is mistaken for an all-knowing Wizard. Word has it none other than Robert Downey Jr. is up for the role of ‘The Wizard’ though no deal has been made.
So there you have it folks. A whole lot of ‘maybes’ with absolutely no ‘for-sures.’ We’ll be keeping our eyes on this project and hoping for something a little darker than the OZ we’re used to. If Raimi jumps on board we’ll keep a closer eye on this little diddy so be sure to keep it here for more on the project as we hear it!
