Disney Plus Day 2021 Wrap Up

Last Updated on January 11, 2022

Disney Plus Day 2021 happened last Friday and the reaction from fans has been…mixed. They promised to reveal all sorts of trailers and announcements for upcoming projects on Disney Plus and certainly, we got a taste of things to come. The reveals were mainly kept to four different brands in the ever-expanding Disney portfolio. Let’s break it down into these separate brand domains with Star Wars, Marvel, Pixar, and Disney.

Star Wars

Obi-Wan Kenobi

Obi Wan Kenobi

The one project everyone was holding out hope for was the Obi-Wan Kenobi series and Disney made sure it was a center point of their Star Wars announcements. Here we got a video with some behind-the-scenes interviews with Ewan McGregor going over what to expect from the upcoming series. He seems most excited by the return of Hayden Christensen as Darth Vader. This is the first time the two actors have been able to reunite since the Prequel Trilogy. Sadly, no trailer – yet.

The Legacy Of Boba Fett

With the upcoming series The Book Of Boba Fett, Disney has decided to put together a documentary going over the character’s legacy. He has gripped the Star Wars community since his first appearance. The best part of this announcement was that it was already streaming on the service, so fans of the character were able to dive right in!

What is surprising is that there were no announcements about other live-action Star Wars series that are on the horizon like Ashoka or Andor. Even some surprise drops for returning shows like The Mandalorian and The Bad Batch would have been prime content for the day.

Marvel

A lot of the announcements for Disney Plus Day 2021 centered on the Marvel brand. Their ever-expanding presence on Disney Plus gave them a lot to talk about. We got some first looks at some high-profile projects and some surprise announcements about the revival of a couple of shows that have been over for decades.

Moon Knight

Moon Knight Costume

The character of Moon Knight is an obscure character in Marvel that has a dedicated following. The interesting thing about him is his mental instability which lends him an aura of rash decisions and violence. Oscar Isaac will be bringing him to life and from this preview, we are in for a treat. We get a quick shot of the costume which looks pretty comic accurate.

She-Hulk

She Hulk

We only got a quick look at this upcoming series. The most notable thing we get from the preview is Mark Ruffalo’s Smart Hulk showing back up to help the new green-skinned heroine learn about her newfound abilities. Tatiana Maslany will be playing the main character of Jennifer Walters. We only get a quick shot from behind of her in her hulked-out form.

Secret Invasion

Nick Fury

While not much was revealed a still image of Sam Jackson’s Nick Fury unveiled a new look for the character with a graying beard and no eyepatch. It’s unknown what story the series will follow but in the original comic series, it was revealed that some heroes in the Marvel Universe had been replaced by Skrulls and they were planning a full-force invasion of Earth. Whether this will be the plot still remains to be seen.

Ms. Marvel

Ms. Marvel

Another quick teaser was dropped for the upcoming superhero series on Disney Plus. It shows Kamala figuring out her new powers and showing her adoration to her favorite superhero Captain Marvel.

X-Men ’97

X-Men 97

One of the more unexpected reveals is the announcement that the popular 90’s X-Men cartoon will be getting new episodes. A lot of the original voice cast will return to the series and it will pick up where the original show left off. For fans of the cartoon, this is very exciting news.

Miscellaneous

Agatha House Of Harkness

Some other shows were announced but no footage or anything else was really revealed. Returning shows include Loki Season 2 and What If … ? New spin offs announced include Echo which is a continuation of the upcoming Hawkeye series, Marvel Zombies which comes out of the recent What If … ? season, and Agatha: House Of Harkness spinning out of WandaVision.

New shows include some animated fare like Spider-Man: Freshman Year and I Am Groot. Live action series include Ironheart which will introduce Riri Williams as a new armor-suited hero in the style of Ironman.

Pixar

Cars On The Road

Cars On the Road

With Owen Wilson returning to the Disney fold for Loki, perhaps it’s no surprise that he’s returning to his old Cars character Lightning McQueen. Wonder if all those Loki variant memes helped? This series will reunite Wilson with Larry The Cable Guy as Mater. Here they will travel to a new city each week and meet new vehicles with some old friends popping up now and again.

Disney Plus Day 2021 also gave a few quick announcements with a new short from the Luca film called Ciao Alberto which depicts Albert after Luca leaves for school. They announced a new series Win Or Lose which follows a co-ed softball team the week before their championship game. And if you’re into behind the scenes documentaries they said they would have two of them for the upcoming releases of Lightyear and Turning Red.

Disney

Hocus Pocus 2

Hocus Pocus 2

This film has been in the works for a while, but we’re now close to finally having it in front of us. The Sanderson Sisters are back to try to renew their youth almost 30 years after the last time we saw them. They will cross paths with some more teen characters and hopefully a few familiar faces.

Disenchanted

Enchanted

Fifteen years after the original film Enchanted hit screens we’ll be seeing the returning fairy tale characters played by Amy Adams and Patrick Dempsey back at it. The film will be exclusive to Disney Plus and will be sure to bring back fans of the original.

Willow

Warwick Davis gave us a behind-the-scenes look at the cast of the upcoming sequel series while seeming to play the version of Davis we saw in his mockumentary series Life’s Too Short. He interacts with them as if he is better than them at everything and doesn’t understand these younger actors. It’s played for laughs and the whole group does a great job. We didn’t learn much about the series, but it’s still exciting to see that the show is moving forward.

Baymax!

The inflatable hero from Big Hero 6 gets his own series as he tries to help out people from the neighborhood. His usual monotone voice added to his technological aptitudes create great comedic moments.

Rescue Rangers

Rescue Rangers

The old Chip n Dale Rescue Rangers franchise will get a reboot with a new movie. Starring Andy Samberg and John Mulaney, the new film should be dropping in the Spring of 2022.

A few other Disney Plus Day 2021 announcements include Limitless with Chris Hemsworth. This series will show him undergoing strenuous feats around the world to demonstrate the strength of the human body. Then Will Smith will be trying out one of his famous catchphrases with Welcome To Earth. He will be traveling to different famous sites around the world.

A new live-action Pinocchio will be coming to Disney Plus in September 2022 starring Tom Hanks, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Keegan-Michael Key. Ice Age is now officially joining Disney as they release Ice Age Adventures Of Wild Buck. Then Zootopia will be getting a new short form series with Zootopia+.
