Director Neill Blomkamp has been doing the press rounds recently to promote his new film Gran Turismo (read our review HERE), and he doesn’t seem particularly enthusiastic when interviewers mention his first movie District 9 – which was up for multiple Oscars, including Best Picture. An interview with Uproxx got a lot of attention when it sputtered out after the interviewer tried to talk about District 9 and Blomkamp’s scrapped Aliens sequel, with Blomkamp saying along the way “I guess I am tired of talking about (District 9)”. Two and a half years ago, Blomkamp announced that he was working on a script for the sequel District 10 with Sharlto Copley and Terri Tatchell… but in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he doesn’t sound very interested in pursuing it, even if he admits that it will probably get made at some point.

Since Gran Turismo and District 9 were both Sony releases, Blomkamp was asked if District 10 would be tied to Sony as well. He answered, “Yeah, they would be tied to it. I don’t know if it’s getting made or not. I don’t know if I even want to make that right now, but at some point down the line, it’ll probably get made.

When the interviewer said the positive response to Gran Turismo bodes well for District 10, Blomkamp said, “Yeah, that makes sense.

Scripted by Blomkamp and Tatchell, District 9 starred Copley and was released in 2009. The story began in an alternate 1982, when an alien spaceship appears over Johannesburg, South Africa. When a population of sick and malnourished insectoid aliens is discovered on the ship, the South African government confines them to an internment camp called District 9. Twenty years later, during the government’s relocation of the aliens to another camp, one of the confined aliens named Christopher Johnson, who is about to try to escape from Earth with his son and return home, crosses paths with a bureaucrat leading the relocation named Wikus van der Merwe.
