Does Alex Garland plan to direct Annihilation 2 & 3?

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Writer-director Alex Garland's new sci-fi thriller ANNIHILATION starring Natalie Portman is now available to own on digital, DVD, and Blu-ray as of today. And to promote the recent home video release, Garland spoke with IndieWire about the film. One of the most interesting bits is when Garland told the site that he wasn't interested in making a sequel. This is a bit strange considering the film is based on the first novel in Jeff VanderMeer’s Southern Reach Trilogy.

Specifically, Garland says:

When the thing is done, I am done with it. I instantly start moving on, so I don’t even have an opinion on an ‘Annihilation’ sequel. All the way through I was clear with everyone, from the studio to the cast, I told everyone that I didn’t really see it as part of a franchise. My goal was to make this film and do the best job I can. I didn’t even conceptualize it as the start of a trilogy. Sequels are just not something I’m interested in doing. It’s like when you don’t like steak, you don’t make the decision not to eat steak, you just don’t eat steak. I just don’t do sequels.

He continues:

I’ve got no objection to someone else doing that, but I’m not interested in the idea of a sequel. I feel like we made this movie and this is the movie we made.

I really don't know what to say about this news considering that (gasp) I have not yet had the pleasure of sitting down and watching Garland's new movie. It is near the top of my Must-See list so hopefully, I will get to it this weekend – after binge-watching the new season of ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT.

You can buy the film on Blu-ray HERE.
