Last week we heard some semi-troubling reports from behind the scenes of DREDD; word was that things weren’t gelling in the editing room, and director Pete Travis had basically been asked to take a walk around the block a couple thousand times while writer-producer Alex Garland supervised the cutting of the film. Not necessarily good press for the highly-anticipated sci-fi thriller starring Karl Urban, Lena Headey and Olivia Thirlby.
Today, however, everyone is holding hands and singing in harmony – at least according to a jointly released statement from Garland and Travis. The LA Times once again has the scoop on the DREDD front, and here’s what was passed along:
‘Dredd’ has been a collaboration between a number of dedicated creative parties. From the outset we decided on an unorthodox collaboration to make the film. This situation has been misinterpreted. To set the record straight, Pete was not fired and remains a central part of the collaboration, and Alex is not seeking a co-director credit. We are all extremely proud of the film we have made, and respectfully suggest that it is judged on viewing when its released next year.”
Make of that what you will: Is it obvious PR damage control, or a truthful statement regarding a supposedly “unorthodox” collaboration..? (One that apparently has one director calling shots on set and another making decisions in the editing room.)
One day, the whole story will come out…
