DTESS in deep space

Ready to be a part of motion picture history? And by being a part, I mean are you ready to witness a first in motion picture history that, when your kids ask 10 years from now, you can say, yeah… I was there. You don’t really have a choice in the matter, so I might as well stop asking trivial questions and dive right into it.

To pimp out THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, 20th Century Fox is going to send a transmission of the film… into deep space. Outer space. The cosmos. That’s right folks, if there is intelligent life out there, the first thing they’re going to know about us is that we are at war with other alien civilizations bent on destroying our planet. Yeah, that’s the image I want all aliens in the galaxy to have of us…

This may sound strange, but trust me… it’s true. Check it out, from their official press release: The first deliberate deep space transmission of this highly anticipated science fiction thriller will begin this Friday, December 12, 2008, to coincide with the film’s opening day on Planet Earth. If any civilizations are currently orbiting Alpha Centauri, they will be able to receive and view the film approximately four years from now in the year 2012.

Which basically means, if it spawns an actual alien invasion, it likely won’t happen for another four years. Awesome. Fox is teaming up with Deep Space Communications Network located
at Cape Canaveral to transmit the film into out space. They would also like to point out that, because it would take four years to get out there, they wouldn’t receive any reviews of the film from space for at least another eight years. Hardy-har-har.

I guess there are worse movies to blast off into outer space, and a sci-fi epic like DTESS is fitting, so cool beans. At least it’s not something like BRIDE WARS, which I saw a preview for the other day and practically threw up in mouth afterwards. The space transmittal and the wide theaterical release of THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL begins this Friday. Are you ready for it?
