Grab your D20 and prepare for battle because Paramount and eOne‘s Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is finally ready to be revealed with the first trailer! The film begins its campaign to conquer San Diego Comic-Con this afternoon with a panel showcasing the upcoming live-action adventure directed by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein.

Based on the epic fantasy role-playing tabletop experience, Dungeons & Dragons stars Chris Pine (Star Trek: BeyondDon’t Worry Darling), Michelle Rodriguez (Resident EvilFast & Furious franchise), Regé-Jean Page (Bridgerton), Sophia Lillis (Gretel and HanselIt: Chapter Two), Justice Smith (Jurassic World: Fallen KingdomPaper Towns), and Hugh Grant (Paddington 2The Gentlemen).

Like the time-honored role-playing game, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves revolves around a ragtag group of adventures exploring a world filled with mythical creatures, malevolent magic, and reward waiting for the bravest of the brave.

Today’s Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves panel that accompanied the trailer was moderated by Twitch streamer and D&D mega-fan Karl Jacobs. Cast members and filmmakers in attendance include Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Sophia Lillis, Hugh Grant, Jonathan Goldstein (Director), John Francis Daley (Director), and Jeremy Latcham (Producer).

After a brief technical snafu, a sizzle reel played for the audience. JoBlo’s Chris Bumbray is at the panel and says the movie looks fun and quite funny. In the footage, there’s a scene where Regé-Jean Page gives Chris Pine a mythical helmet and says, “Guard this with your life.” Pine replies, “I will,” with great conviction, and immediately hands the item to Justice Smith’s character saying, “Here, hold this.”

Daley (Freaks and Geeks) and Goldstein (Game Night) then took the stage. The duo says they’ve been filming non-stop, even during the pandemic. Daley says his Freaks and Geeks character, Sam Weir, was obsessed with Dungeons & Dragons. He started playing the game in his spare time while saying it was his version of “method acting.”

Daley says the movie has much to do with camaraderie and surrogate family because that’s how people played the games. He also says the film has a lot of humor because that’s a byproduct of playing the game with a great group of friends.

Pine then walked onto the stage, dressed in crazy long hair and pink pants. They introduced him while playing Dropkick Murphys on the PA. Michelle Rodriguez also enters the fray alongside Regé-Jean Page. Audience members are losing their collective minds for Rodriguez and the Birdgerton star. Lillis and Grant have also arrived. Pine says his nephew, who is 13, is a massive player of D&D who writes campaigns. He says they sent him a D&D pack, and his nephew when ballistic. Then Pine played a campaign with his family, including his father and annoyed sister, who didn’t want to play. Everyone had a blast and loved it, which made him want to do the movie.

Pine says, “If there’s one game that should be played in every high school across the nation, it should be D&D. You can get the jocks, bullies, and nerds together, and everyone will love it and share a laugh.” Pine is devoting himself to spreading the gospel of D&D after this experience.

Rodriguez says, “I grew up in Jersey, and that’s what you do. You play D&D.” She hadn’t played since she was 15. She loves RPGs and thinks everyone should experience them.

Page is a PC gamer who loves Chrono Trigger and Diablo. He said he was Eddie Munson as a kid. Being picked on, and then going home and shredding on guitar.

Lillis is a hardcore D&D player. She listens to gaming podcasts and loves to get friends together for adventures.

As for Grant, he’s been a D&D enthusiast for years. However, Rodriguez interrupted him by saying, “I think you mean S&M.” Grant replied, “You’re not wrong. I’ve been a dungeon master for a long time.” Saucy!

Pine says Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves has Spielbergian energy to it and that the movie is “fun, buoyant, and alive.”

After the stars said their piece, the audience saw a clip with unfinished effects. In the footage, a group of adventurers are trying to find a mythical helmet and have to raise some corpses. Rodriguez is a Barbarian. She gained 15 pounds of muscle for the movie. They dig up the corpse and get “Five questions.”

Pine’s character wastes the five questions by accident, so they raise another corpse. Then there’s a flashback to a colossal battle. The directors say the film contains tons of monsters and spells. All are true to D&D lore presented by Wizards of the Coast. Page plays a Paladin, while Grant’s character gave him an excuse to “get his bottom in shape.” He likes the costumes in the movie a lot.

In another clip, Grant’s character is the villain in an arena and is about to send the heroes to their doom. He sends the party into a maze they will need to escape. Chris was impressed by the footage and thinks the movie looks better than expected.

During the panel, a child asked Grant if there were anything he would take home from the set. Grant replied, “Yes, I always take home a couple of extras. I’ve collected them over the years and got some pretty onesthis time. They’re in my dungeon now.” What a scamp! Grant also implied that his power animal is a tiger because that’s how he performs in the bedroom. Roar!

Bumbray says this Dungeons & Dragons and its trailer reminds him of Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean.

During the Q&A portion of the panel, the group of actors was asked what class they would play in a real game of Dungeons & Dragons:

Grant: “I would be the highest class.” He had no idea what they were talking about with this question.

Lillis: Bard

Page: Universal Bard. He prefers to play a Support Class

Rodriguez: Wizard

Pine: Bard, 24/7

If they could cross D&D with another franchise, what would it be:

Page: Sense and Sensibility

Rodriguez: Asimov’s Foundation

Pine: Top GunD&D needs Tom Cruise and wizards

Earlier, Paramount and eOne shared a motion preview of the film’s main characters. Pine’s character appears to be a Bard, shredding on an enchanted lute before swinging a mighty sword. Rodriguez is wielding a battle ax with gnashed teeth, while Page sports a dagger, a sword, and heavy armor. Smith enters the group as a wizard, while Lillis looks like a nature-oriented druid or ranger. Meanwhile, Grant holds a torch and a cup of piping hot tea in his promo.

Based on Hasbro’s Dungeons & Dragons, the fantasy-oriented feature is being produced by Jeremy Latcham, Brian Goldner, and Nick Meyer, with executive producers Denis L. Stewart, Goldstein, Daley, Pine, Zev Foreman, and Greg Mooradian.
