Now Playing Magazine had a chance to sit down with writer/director Paul Anderson while on his promotional tour of the DVD releases of RESIDENT EVIL: APOCALYPSE and ALIEN VS. PREDATOR (see article HERE).
Now I could really give a left handed jerk about those two flicks, but he did happen to talk about the new Special Edition release of his surprisingly well done 1997 sci-fi horror spectacular, EVENT HORIZON. Here’s what he had to say:
“I just did a commentary for Event Horizon, because we’re releasing a Special Edition of that next year with a lot of deleted scenes, and I went in and did a truly awful commentary for it that I’m going to redo! Because it had been so long since I’d seen the movie, I just started watching the film and enjoying it, and didn’t remember to say anything. And after like an hour and a half I’d said about 10 minutes of stuff. So that was an important lesson to me because if I end up doing that again, I should watch the movie a few times beforehand. Otherwise you just get bound up in watching the film. So it was a rather expensive way to watch the movie!
[EVENT HORIZON] has become such a huge cult hit, Paramount has sold so many DVDs of it that they’ve offered to do the fully-fledged ‘You can reintegrate the scenes and we’ll pay for it to be remixed and everything’ version. The problem has been actually finding all of the materials because it’s been quite a long time, so we’re still at the point where we’re trying to decide if it makes sense to do a director’s cut or whether [we should just include] a lot of deleted material with a separate commentary explaining why it was taken out and where the scenes would have gone. Or we may do a branching version of the DVD so you can see where those scenes may have sat.”
Well tickle my pickle, this is just what we needed! Sci-Fi horror hasn’t been the same since EVENT HORIZON, with it’s gritty tone, and damn scariness- my only question here is: Paul, what happened!? How could you make such a great movie, only to follow it up with one crappy hit after another? Damned if I know… EVENT HORIZON Special Edition DVD hits shelves sometime 2005.
