Bah! Humbug! Johnny Depp becomes Ebenezer Scrooge in leaked photos from Ti West’s A Christmas Carol

Johnny Depp Scrooge

Slowly but surely, Johnny Depp is edging into the limelight with a varied list of upcoming projects. His forthcoming thriller, Day Drinker, directed by Marc Webb, recently wrapped production, with Madelyn Cline and Penélope Cruz starring alongside Depp. However, if you’re missing the days when Depp transforms for a role, look forward to Ti West’s upcoming film Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol. The project hails from Paramount, and stars Depp as Charles Dickens’ iconic curmudgeon Ebenezer Scrooge. What will Depp look like as the surly Grinch? I’m glad you asked, because today, we’ve got a few first-look images of Depp as Ebenezer!

Ti West is directing a holiday film?!

Ti West directs Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol from a script by Nathaniel Halpern. Last year, Deadline ran a story about the production, saying, “the classic Charles Dickens story has seen its fair share of retellings over the years with its tale of an elderly miser visited by the ghost of his former business partner and the spirits of Christmas Past, Christmas Present and Christmas Yet to Come.” For his first major studio movie, “West will be telling a thrilling ghost story set in Dickens’ London, following one man’s supernatural journey to face his past, present and future and fight for a second chance.”

Ebenezer Scrooge: A Grouchy Fashion Icon

In the new photos, we find Depp dressed in a dark blue overcoat and cap, his long gray hair poking out from beneath the hat. Depp looks as if he’s freezing his ass off in the pics, and his makeup is a smear of powder and liquid. Under his coat, we find Depp wearing a button-down vest and a white frilly shirt not unlike the one Jerry Seinfeld wore in that one episode of Seinfeld. Andrea Riseborough (Mandy) stars alongside Depp in the upcoming film. Emma Watts is producing, with Stephen Deuters and Jason Forman serving as executive producers.

Look, this is cool and all, but nothing will ever top The Muppet Christmas Carol or Bill Murray’s Scrooged. Michael Caine is the ultimate Ebenezer Scrooge, although I do not doubt that Depp will give the role his all. The only thing that interests me about this project is Ti West directing the holiday classic. Given his horror background, I’ve no idea how this version of Dickens’ holiday tale will arrive. Color me curious.
