Devilish Depp
In two of Johnny Depp’s big return to movies, he’s embracing playing the villain. Last month, we got a better look at his movie with director Marc Webb, titled Day Drinker. This movie looked like it could have been a suspenseful mystery-thriller at first glance, but the trailer showed us more horror elements than we had been prepared for and now Depp’s character has a more sinister (possibly werewolf?) element. However, before that film, Depp will be portraying literature’s most famous Christmas grump — Ebenezer Scrooge.
Ebenezer
Paramount Pictures has just unveiled the new trailer for Ti West’s incarnation of A Christmas Carol with Johnny Depp in Ebenezer. The film features quite a cast. In addition to starring Depp as Ebenezer Scrooge, we’ve got Sir Ian McKellen as Jacob Marley, Andrea Riseborough as the Ghost of Christmas Past, Tramell Tillman as the Ghost of Christmas Present, Daisy Ridley as Emily Cratchit, Rupert Grint as Bob Cratchit, and Sam Claflin as Fred (Ebenezer’s nephew), as well as Charlie Murphy, Ellie Bamber, and Arthur Conti.
The official synopsis from Paramount reads,
“This November, Johnny Depp is Ebenezer Scrooge. The name you know, the story you don’t. From Ti West, EBENEZER also stars Rupert Grint, Andrea Riseborough, Sam Claflin, Daisy Ridley, Arthur Conti, Ellie Bamber, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Charlie Murphy, with Tramell Tillman and Ian McKellen.”
West directs from a script penned by Nathaniel Halpern. The trailer shows nearly all the familiar beats of the famous holiday story, but with Johnny Depp having an absolute ball playing Scrooge. There may be some twists in the story, as at one point, it feels like Ebenezer is still being haunted by ghosts after his three encounters.
The executive producers on the movie include Ti West, Adam Bohling, David Reid, Stephen Deuters, Jason Forman, Pete Chiappetta, Anthony Tittanegro and Andrew Lary. Meanwhile, Emma Watts is on board as a producer.
Carols Everywhere
The story of A Christmas Carol has been adapted a lot, with one of the earliest surviving film adaptations dating all the way back to 1901. Some of the interpretations of the classic story include The Muppet Christmas Carol, Scrooged starring Bill Murray, and a motion-capture movie from Robert Zemeckis featuring Jim Carrey as Scrooge and the three ghosts.
Ebenezer will hit theaters on November 13.
