Umbrella Academy star Elliot Page will keep playing Vanya Hargreeves

Umbrella Academy, Elliot Page, Vanya Hargreeves, Season 3

Fans can rest easy as Netflix has confirmed that for The Umbrella Academy Elliot Page will remain in the role of Vanya Hargreeves on the hit comic book series. Moreover, a day after Page's announcement of his transition was made on social media, the streaming platform has updated all of the credits for films and series featuring the actor.

As fans of the supremely odd superhero series will know, Vanya is a cisgender woman whose superpower involves unleashing force through the use of sound. The character will remain a part of the show, unchanged, with Page continuing to own the role as he always has.

While scores of individuals across social media platforms celebrated Page's inspiring news, there, of course, were those who raged in confusion about the actor's declaration. Thankfully, GLADD,  the LGBTQ advocacy group, was there to explain why there's no need to recast the role of Vanya with a cisgender female actor.

“Trans actors can and do play both trans and cisgender characters. I’m sure Elliot will continue to be brilliant in Umbrella Academy and many different types of roles in the future,” Nick Adams, director of transgender media at GLAAD, told Variety.

You can read Page's heartfelt message to friends and fans below and can look forward to seeing him as Vanya in the third season of The Umbrella Academy.
