Emma Stone in talks to play Cruella de Vil in live-action Disney film

Disney's ambition to give every one of their animated characters the live-action treatment is proceeding as planned; next step, world domination. The next Disney character to make the leap to live-action (again) will be Cruella de Vil, the villainess who sought to capture and skin a large amount of Dalmatian puppies in Disney's 1961 animated classic ONE HUNDRED AND ONE DALMATIANS. As to who might play such a despicable character, THR has the scoop. The outlet reports that Emma Stone is currently in early talks to play the character in CRUELLA.

CRUELLA will be an origin story for the character, taking place before she became a walking collection of cheek bones and fur-coats, and although the film doesn't have a director attached at the moment, it's considered to be a priority project by Disney. The latest script for CRUELLA comes from Kelly Marcel (FIFTY SHADES OF GREY) and Disney would like shooting to get underway later this year. The last live-action version of Cruella de Vil was played to the hilt by Glenn Close around twenty years ago, but I'd be curious to see how Emma Stone would tackle the character before her slide into murderous puppy lust.

Emma Stone's upcoming work includes LA LA LAND, Damien Chazelle's follow-up to WHIPLASH which pairs Stone with Ryan Gosling as two young people who are "drawn together by their common desire to do what they love. But as success mounts they are faced with decisions that begin to fray the fragile fabric of their love affair, and the dreams they worked so hard to maintain in each other threaten to rip them apart." Billed as a modern-day Hollywood musical, LA LA LAND will see its release on July 15, 2016.
