With Daniel Craig's fifth and final film as James Bond now a little over a year away, it will soon be time for a new actor to take on the mantle of 007, and some believe that the role should be given to a woman. Several actresses, including Emilia Clarke, Priyanka Chopra, Gillian Anderson, and Elizabeth Banks, have expressed their desire to play a gender-swapped version of Bond, but one person who doesn't think that Bond should be a woman is Eva Green, who played Vesper Lynd in CASINO ROYALE.
While speaking with Vanity Fair on the DUMBO red-carpet, Eva Green explained, "I'm for women, but I really think James Bond should remain a man. It doesn’t make sense for him to be a woman," Green continued. "Women can play different types of characters, be in action movies and be superheroes, but James Bond should always be a man and not be Jane Bond. There is history with the character that should continue. He should be played by a man." Green's opinion mirrors that of Rachel Weisz, who previously proposed, "Why not create your own story rather than jumping onto the shoulders and being compared to all those other male predecessors?… Women are really fascinating and interesting, and should get their own stories." James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli also seems to share that sentiment.
Bond is male. He’s a male character. He was written as a male and I think he’ll probably stay as a male. And that’s fine. We don’t have to turn male characters into women. Let’s just create more female characters and make the story fit those female characters.
Despite not counting herself among those who want a gender-swapped Bond, Eva Green is proud of her part in the evolution of the franchise. "I love the fact that the Bond girls have evolved," said Green. "I originally had reservations about being a Bond girl. I didn’t want to be a bimbo. The women are now perceived differently. They are intelligent and sassy and fascinating. I loved playing Vesper. She’s the only one to get to Bond’s heart and has a big impact on his life." BOND 25 is currently slated for an April 8, 2020 release. What do you folks think?
