David Fincher has been at Netflix for thirteen years, but it seems that partnership has finally come to an end. According to Bloomberg, Fincher has decided not to renew his deal with the streaming service. It’s a whole new world.

Fincher’s collaboration with Netflix goes all the way back to 2013, when he signed on to direct and executive-produce House of Cards. Since then, he’s made three movies for the company, including Mank, The Killer, and the upcoming Cliff Booth movie. Not to mention executive-producing and directing Tim Miller’s animated anthology series Love, Death & Robots, as well as Mindhunter, the serial killer drama which desperately needs to come back for a third season. That’s looking even more unlikely now.
Would these films have gotten made otherwise? It’s hard to say. Fincher is an acclaimed, in-demand director, but Netflix offered him a lot of creative freedom, more than he might have found at a conventional studio.
Fincher’s deal with Netflix will expire next year.

The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth
So, it seems that the final project of the David Fincher/Netflix partnership will be The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth. The project originated from Tarantino’s scrapped script for what would have been his tenth and final movie. Brad Pitt was very interested in his character’s part and asked Tarantino if he would let someone else take the helm of the project. Enter David Fincher, who quickly earned Tarantino’s blessing.
In addition to Pitt, the film also stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Elizabeth Debicki, Scott Caan, Carla Gugino, and more.
The film takes place in 1977, eight years after the events of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. This time, Booth is a fixer, resolving problems for those in Hollywood. “He’s curious when he gets a call from talent agent Karen Crosby (Debicki), on behalf of her client, TV megastar Charlie Peters (Caan) — a man known for doing his own stunts,” reads the description. “And he’s further entertained and intrigued when he meets other characters in Charlie’s world, from his knowing wife Toni (Carla Gugino) to pro football champion turned screen star Roderick “Hot Rod” Harrison (Abdul-Mateen II). Then there are the Verdusco brothers (Matt Groove and JB Tadena), mysterious gangsters causing mayhem across the city. What was once a fairytale is now a crime story — a cocktail of violence, ambition, and desire that could only happen in LA.“
The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth will debut for a two-week exclusive engagement in IMAX Theaters globally on November 25, before debuting on Netflix on December 23.
