Sean Penn is trying his hand at the action genre this month with THE GUNMAN, which comes from director Pierre Morel, who kicked off Liam Neeson's action career with TAKEN. Not a bad way to start if that's your aim. The flick also stars Idris Elba, Ray Winstone, and Javier Bardem, making this a bit more high profile than you'd expect from a glitzy actioner. Today, we have an exclusive TV spot for the film, which shows that Penn may well have a shot at a new career path if it takes.

Check it out:

Here's the synopsis:

A former Special Forces soldier and military contractor suffering from PTSD tries to reconnect with his long time love, but first must go on the run from London to Barcelona and across Europe in order to clear his name.

I'm hot and cold with Penn, but will say that when he commits to a role he can generally nail it. If nothing else, he's an interesting guy to watch onscreen and has delivered some solid work behind the camera as well. Putting Bardem and Elba into the mix makes for a batch of cool actors just having some fun and I can respect that. It won't redefine cinema, but THE GUNMAN has potential to be a fun romp.

THE GUNMAN opens fire on March 20, 2015.
