We just received a nice teaser announcement from Fantasia International Film Festival, which is about to enter its 14th year of existence. Not a line-up of films (but that’s on the horizon), but a look at what’s been planned so far.

One highlight will be a screening of an uncut edition of METROPOLIS: Featuring over 25 minutes of new material (1,257 shots, including entire new sequences), the complete METROPOLIS will be screened as a special gala event at the 3000-seat Wilfred Pelletier theatre in Place des Arts on July 28. For this special night, internationally renowned silent film composer Gabriel Thibaudeau is writing a new score for the feature, which he will perform with a 13-piece orchestra live at the screening.

Director Ken Russell will receive a lifetime achievement award; in honor of that, the fest will be hosting a massive retrospective of the man’s films (ALTERED STATES, LAIR OF THE WHITE WORM, TOMMY, CRIMES OF PASSION, etc.), as well as screen a rare 35mm print of his explosive and still-controversial 1971 masterpiece THE DEVILS.

Also receiving Lifetime Achievement awards will be Don Bluth and Gary Goldman, directors of THE SECRET OF NIMH, THE LAND BEFORE TIME, AN AMERICAN TAIL and ALL DOGS GO TO HEAVEN.

Another treat: Stuart Gordon and Jeffrey Combs are bringing their one-man play NEVERMORE: AN EVENING WITH EDGAR ALLAN POE, to the fest. This is the first time the play, which is recreation of the public recitals that Poe regularly performed in the years before his death, based on reviews and reports of his actual appearances, will premiere internationally, after its successful runs in Chicago and L.A. In addition, there will be an uncut 35mm print of RE-ANIMATOR, hosted by Gordon and Combs.

The 14th annual Fantasia International Film Festival takes place in Montreal July 8 – July 28 2010. Check out the official site HERE.
