This has certainly been a long time coming: Darren Lynn Bousman’s remake of MOTHER’S DAY will at last see the light of day here in the US. Deadline.com reports that Anchor Bay Films has acquired the Brett Ratner-produced thriller, with an eye toward releasing it on Mother’s Day, MAY 13th (although that appears to be tentative at this point).
“With Saw’s Darren Lynn Bousman at the helm and a cast featuring DeMornay, Ashmore and Woll, Mother’s Day has an unbeatable horror pedigree,” said Kevin Kasha, Anchor Bay exec veep of acquisitions and co-productions. “We’re thrilled to add this chiller to the Anchor Bay Films roster of terror classics.”
It’s been a long journey for the film, which has been released overseas – and widely pirated online; Mr. Bousman can finally rest easy that his flick will reach an audience on domestic shores. (Incidentally, it was only a week ago that he spoke to us on the podcast and bemoaned the movie’s fate.)
The synopsis: After a bank robbery gone wrong, three brothers head for home, hoping their mother (Rebecca De Mornay) can provide them with a getaway. The youngest brother, Johnny (Matt O’Leary), has been shot, and their back-stabbing former partner has gotten away with all the cash.
But when the brothers get home, they find that all their stuff is gone and Mother is nowhere to be found: She lost the house months ago in a foreclosure. The new owners, Beth and Daniel (Jaime King and Frank Grillo), and their guests, gathered for an ill-timed birthday party, become the brothers’ unwitting hostages.
Not long after, Mother arrives, along with the boys’ sister Lydia (Deborah Ann Woll), and it soon becomes clear that Mother will do absolutely anything to protect her children. In one terrifying evening she brilliantly takes control of the situation and masterminds her sons’ escape from the law.
Anchor Bay will also distribute Bousman’s THE BARRENS, which the director recently wrapped. Meanwhile, his 11-11-11 comes out on Friday. Whew!
