The Wrap has learned that Fionn Whitehead is up for one of the two lead roles in Christopher Nolan's World War II flick DUNKIRK. It doesn't sound like Whitehead has officially signed on yet, but sources tell the site that he is Nolan's top choice for the part.

This could be a big win for the young British actor, a member of the National Youth Theatre whose only credit to date is the three-part ITV drama Him.

Tom Hardy, Mark Rylance and Kenneth Branagh will have supporting roles in Nolan's new movie, which will follow Operation Dynamo (also known as The Miracle of Dunkirk), the evacuation of Allied soldiers from the French seaport during the second World War after a large numbers of troops were cut off and surrounded by the German army during the Battle of France. Nolan (who also wrote the script) will be shooting DUNKIRK on IMAX 65mm and 65mm large-format film, and principal photography is expected to begin this May.

DUNKIRK will be in theaters on July 21, 2017.
