First image from The Walking Dead season 9 and time-jump details revealed

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

If you've grown tired of The Walking Dead over the past few years, the upcoming ninth season may provide an opportunity to get back on board. In what new show-runner Angela King describes to Entertainment Weekly as the "start of a new chapter" of the series, the ninth season will also jump forward in time and find that society has literally been crumbling away.

"We’ll explore what happened as man made objects and structures break down. Infrastructure like roads and bridges are changing and crumbling. And we’ll also explore what happens as resources are getting low," said Kang. "There’s a fun Western vibe that has emerged. We are going into a period where a lot of the things that we’ve seen in previous seasons have broken down, so they’ve got these horses and carriages that are being drawn around instead of cars. Things are lit with oil lamps. People are using different kinds of weaponry. There’s a real grittiness to it that I think will be fun and fresh for the viewers." That Western vibe is brought to life in the first official image from the ninth season, which finds Michonne (Danai Gurira) on horseback leading survivors with wagons and buggies.

Angela King teased that, "We’ll see our group together working in unity in a lot of ways, but you’ll also see some changes in the way that they deal with each other. In some ways, you’ll see that the vision has succeeded beyond anybody’s wildest imagination. But you’ll also see the cracks in that." Both Andrew Lincoln and Lauren Cohan will reportedly be leaving The Walking Dead at some point during the ninth season, and despite walking away from the series last season, they've successfully suckered me back to the fold, if only to see how the long-running characters are written out.

The Walking Dead will return to AMC this October.
