First look at Melissa Benoist in costume from CBS’ Supergirl TV series

With ARROW and THE FLASH, Greg Berlanti has given us two solid hours of superhero television. With his third attempt at adapting a DC Comics character, Berlanti will try to do the same for Supergirl. With a cast that includes former SUPERGIRL Helen Slater, former Superman Dean Cain, Calista Flockhart, and WHIPLASH actress Mellisa Benoist in the title role, the new series will hopefully be another enjoyable small screen adventure.

We now have our first look at Benoist in costume as Kara Zor-el. The first thing you will notice is that Supergirl is no longer blonde. The second thing you will notice is how similar the costume looks to Henry Cavill‘s in MAN OF STEEL. The colors are muted and it is not as revealing as we have seen in some comic book variations of the female Kryptonian. The costume comes from Academy Award winner Colleen Atwood who also designed the costumes for ARROW and THE FLASH. She had this to say about the new Supergirl.

“In designing Supergirl, I wanted to embrace the past, but more importantly, thrust her into the street-style action hero of today.”

Overall, I am not blown away by the costume. In fact, I can honestly say it looks pretty underwhelming. But, I was not a huge fan of ARROW or THE FLASH costume designs until I saw them in action. I am still willing to give this design a chance as it will really hinge on seeing it in action.

SUPERGIRL will premiere this Fall on CBS.
