Fog Helmer Named

Variety reported yesterday that Rupert Waimwright (STIGMATA) has been named as the director for Revolution Studios remake of John Carpenter’s THE FOG. Great. A remake of a classic from a guy who made that steaming pile of donkey crap STIGMATA… Why don’t they cast Ben Affleck as the title role and get the whole damn thing over with? If they’re going to kill us, they might as well slaughter us!



Apparently the story of the shipwrecked Lepers that come back from the sea to get their revenge is going to be fleshed out more- not just a story told by the old man in the begining, but as an actual flashback.



Debra Hill, producer of the first film, had this to say about having Wainwright at the helm this second time around:



“John laid the groundwork for a very classy, scary movie, and Rupert came in with a take that honors the original but builds on it and stamps it as his own… For us as filmmakers, the opportunity to use special effects to enhance the fog and make it an actual character in the film is very appealing.”



Am I the only one who feels the original did a fine job at creating the character of the fog by using dry ice and a fog machine? I must say building up the background story with the Lepers a bit more brings some pretty cool potential for jumps, scares, and depending on how brutal they decide to do it, damn bloody!



Filming for the remake begins this March, although no one has been cast yet, and the scheduled release date is Oct. 21st, 2005- so go ahead and mark your calendars for the date when the sanctity of horror classics is flushed down the toilet.
