From day one, it was clear that the new Frasier series would be leaving Seattle behind for a different city, but it seems that the series will be going back to where it all began. Paramount+ announced today that the Frasier sequel will be set in Boston, which is where Cheers took place.

There’s no word on whether we can expect the Frasier sequel to include appearances from any Cheers cast members, but it’s hard to imagine the good doctor not returning to his old Boston watering hole. Production on the Frasier sequel is set to begin this week in Los Angeles, with James Burrows helming the first two episodes. Burrows co-created Cheers and directed over 230 episodes of the series. He also directed 32 episodes of Frasier, including the pilot, so it’s only fitting that he would return to help Frasier start the next chapter of his life.

After returning to Boston, Dr. Frasier Crane will “be faced with new challenges, new relationships to forge, and an old dream or two to finally fulfill.” In addition to Kelsey Grammer, the series will also star Jack Cutmore-Scott has Frasier’s son, Freddy, who is described as “charming, handsome, and a nuanced combination of his father and grandfather. Years ago, Freddy rejected following in his father’s footsteps—dropping out of college to become a fireman—and he’s never looked back until now, when recent troubles have left him with no one to turn to in his life. If they can overcome past differences, Freddy and Frasier might finally have a chance to repair old wounds.” The series also stars Nicholas Lyndhurst as Frasier’s old college buddy turned university professor, Alan; Toks Olagundoye as Alan’s colleague and head of the university psychology department, Olivia; Jess Salguerio as Freddy’s roommate, Eve; and Anders Keith as Frasier’s nephew, David, son of Niles and Daphne.

Based on the casting details, it stands to reason that Frasier will be a college professor at this stage of his life, but nothing has been confirmed. I’m a big fan of Frasier, and while I’m not sure we need more of the character, I’m cautiously optimistic about the new series. Fingers crossed.
