Splashing onto the comics scene in 1984 from creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES, beginning as a parody comic of sorts, but later escalated into a full-on cultural phenomenon, due largely to the toys and animated series. While the comic continued on a much darker and serious path, the “cowabunga” version was a massive hit with kids, leading to the Turtles getting their first feature film. Directed by Steve Barron (CONEHEADS) and with animatronic suits designed by Jim Henson‘s Creature Shop, the film quickly cemented the Turtles into the mainstream, ushering in a cavalcade of sequels, cartoons, more toys and even a live musical tour.
