October is like July 4th weekend when it comes to horror movies: the best of the best come out in hopes to win the publics praise- and all of their money. It’s the time when the ‘good stuff’ is usually saved for, as it’s a time when most people, horror freaks and ‘normies’ alike, dig on heading to the theater in hopes in getting the pooped scared outta them.
February, on the other hand, is like releasing your movie on a Monday without telling anyone about it. It’s almost like movie suicide, and the whole month should be considered against the law. Why release a film then? Usually… because it sucks. Sure, once in a while a noteworthy film may be accidentally released in February, but usually… it’s just something the studios want to get rid of unnoticed, so they can forget it and move on.
So when it was announced that Warner Independent Pictures pushed back it’s FUNNY GAMES remake, from it’s original October 28th spot to February 15th, my initial thoughts were not good. Sure, maybe it’s a safe move to move away from SAW IV, which owns the Halloween weekend… but all the way to February??? Not a promising move, if you ask me. Looks like their scared, and it’s the first time when it looks like this may end up blowing donkey balls… but I guess we shall see soon enough.
GAMES stars Naomi Watts and Tim Roth, so it’s not like it doesn’t have star power… who knows the real reasoning here, my only hope is that it breaks the February curse and ends up being WAY better than WIP is treating it.
Look for FUNNY GAMES in theaters everywhere February 15th, 2008.
