Warner Bros has decided to remake the 1944 thriller GASLIGHT. Though I’ve not seen the original, the concept certainly rocks:
Pic revolves around a woman whose suitor has designs on her money, and after luring her to a house of horrors, he methodically tries to convince her she is insane.
The pic was based on a 1938 British play, and according to Variety the MGM classic starred Charles Boyer and Ingrid Bergman and garnered seven Oscar nominations, including a win for Bergman. It also introduced the film’s title into the vernacular, as the act of “gaslighting” someone means to drive them insane.
I’m going to go out on a limb here, and say that any movie that introduced slang that has now been forgotten (aka gaslighting – WTF!?) can be safely remade, Oscar winner or no. Still, I’m gonna have to drop the original in my Netflix rental queue if for no other reason than Bergman is hot!
