Gellar’s Grudge Slays BO

Once again, an Asian horror remake has chopped up the box office and stuffed its competition into little baggies in the downstairs freezer. THE GRUDGE bled $40 million in tasty cash from weekend moviegoers. Leading the cast, and looking fierce in the picture at right, is nouveau scream queen Sarah Michelle Gellar. With multiple genre rolls to her credit, and a preference for pieces on the dark side (Freddie don’t count), might she be the new millennium’s Jamie Lee Curtis?

Now the practical effect of THE GRUDGE’s success will no doubt be an unrelenting flood of Asian horror remakes, and the pain of more focus on keeping our precious horror flicks restrained to an unnatural PG-13 rating. But let’s forget mother…I mean the downsides…for now. It’s a joy to see Horror rule Hollywood again, and with next week’s release of SAW, we just might slay the rest of the month.

In case you’re struggling with the question of remake vs. original, let the Arrow be your guide. Check out his and reviews to get the straight skinny on which is the better cup ‘o fright.
