How f*cking weird is this news?

According to Variety, Geoge Romero is in “advanced negotiations” to remake Dario Argento’s DEEP RED in 3D. It will be an Italo-Canadian co-production by Claudio Argento (Dario’s younger brother) via his Opera Film shingle. Robbie Little’s The Little Company is preselling the pic in Cannes. Claudio also wrote the screenplay.

Shooting will begin this fall in Canada if all goes according to plan. Dario will apparently not have anything to do with the flick, despite the presence of his little brother and long-time friend and collaborator Romero.

For those unaware, DEEP RED (or PROFONDO ROSSO) is about a British pianist (David Hemmings) who witnesses a brutal murder and subsequently gets involved in the investigation of the crime.

There’s no doubt that this is a curious item. DEEP RED is, for bigtime Argento fans, a favorite (personally I think it’s overrated), and Romero is really floundering right now. For better or worse, this is him NOT making a zombie movie, which is what most of us have been pleading for – although, this isn’t what we were expecting. Then again, who could have seen this one coming?
