Ghostbusters animated feature in the works at Sony

In addition to a sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife and an animated Netflix series, Sony is also developing a Ghostbusters animated featureIn addition to a sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife and an animated Netflix series, Sony is also developing a Ghostbusters animated feature

Yesterday morning, we shared the news that Ghostbusters: Afterlife writer/director Jason Reitman and co-writer Gil Kenan are executive producing a Ghostbusters animated series for Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation. As it turns out, that’s not the only animated Ghostbusters project we’ll be seeing in the near future. Sony Pictures Animation has also announced that “a new animated Ghostbusters feature is in development with all new characters and a whole new take – helmed by Jennifer Kluska and Chris Prynosk, and written by Brenda Hsueh.”

Kluska previously directed Hotel Transylvania 4: Transformania, and Prynoski previously directed Nerdland. Hsueh’s writing credits include episodes of How I Met Your Mother and Disjointed.

Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan both now have important positions at Ghost Corps, Inc., the production company that was founded in 2015 by Sony Pictures Entertainment, Columbia Pictures, Dan Aykroyd, the late Ivan Reitman, and Ivan Reitman’s producing partners Tom Pollock and Joe Medjuck to oversee projects related to the Ghostbusters franchise. So they have a hand in this animated Ghostbusters feature as well.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Kenan said,

The animated film will take us to places that we’ve never been before. We love these characters, and we’re so excited to push the boundaries of what we think of as a Ghostbusters story. We will keep the flame burning bright with all these concepts, which will continue to grow what a Ghostbusters story can be.”

Jason Reitman added,

An animated series and an animated film will allow us to go deeper into places that Dan Aykroyd talked about when he first talked about Ghostbusters.”

Reitman has said that “if you’re a Ghostbusters fan, you’ve got a lot coming your way.” With a new animated series, an animated feature, a sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife, and new comic books and video games all in the works, that is clearly very true.
