Ryan Murphy, creator of the ultra happy musical series, GLEE is being eyed by Fox 2000 to direct a remake of THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW.
According to Deadline, Murphy may be locked in a deal to helm after the ROCKY HORROR special of GLEE airs on the 26th.
GLEE’s creator hasn’t committed to a deal, but has been in meetings. Currently Murphy is very busy with his show as well as an adaptation of NORMAL HEART starring Mark Ruffalo. HEART is, “a feature adaptation of the Larry Kramer play about AIDS, written when the disease was a death sentence and nobody seemed to be helping.” Sony also just paid Murphy $5 million to re-team with his EAT, PRAY, LOVE star Julia Roberts on another untitled project.
Usually the first question I’d ask is whether Murphy is right for this project, but this time something different comes to mind–why is this being remade? Lately I’ve sort of kept my mouth shut when it came to the remakes that Hollywood has been offering up. I know that will keep coming regardless of whether 1 or 1,000,000 people whine about them. In my own opinion it’s just hard to top the 1975 original directed by Jim Sharman that starred Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick, Nell Campbell and writer Richard O’Brien.
