Goat: Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw to produce sports-related horror film

While writer/director Jordan Peele prepares for the July 22nd theatrical release of his new film Nope, which is being described by distributor Universal Pictures as a “horror epic”, Deadline reports that Peele’s production company Monkeypaw Productions has just acquired the genre film pitch Goat from writers Zack Akers and Skip Bronkie. Peele will be producing Goat as part of Monkeypaw’s overall deal with Universal.

Details on Goat are scarce, but according to Deadline,

though the title hints at something revolving around everyone’s favorite farm animal, it is actually in reference to the sports acronym “Greatest Of All Time,” aka GOAT, which is thrown around when debating today and yesterday’s sports legends. For this film, the story centers on a promising young athlete who is invited to train with a team’s retiring star.

One could image that set-up might lead to something similar to Peele’s own Get Out, with the retiring star wanting to place his consciousness into the body of the athlete who’s just getting his career started… but that’s definitely not what Goat is. This isn’t a secret sequel to Get Out. ComicBook.com has heard that

The script centers on a rookie QB who goes to train with a retiring star QB who may hold a secret about how he has played so long at such a high level.

Writers Akers and Bronkie previously created the Facebook Watch series Limetown, which starred Jessica Biel (pictured below).

The bits of information that have been made available on Goat have me intrigued, so I look forward to seeing how this one is going to turn out. And to finding out who’s going to be directing the movie.

How does Goat sound to you? What do you think the secret to the retiring quarterback’s success is? Let us know by leaving a comment below.
