It took more than eighteen years for writer/director Nick Cassavetes to manage to get an adaptation of the Boston Teran novel God Is a Bullet (pick up a copy HERE) into production, but he stuck with the project, and his film received a wide theatrical release last month. A week ago, it was given a digital release as well – but now it has come to our attention that there are two different cuts of the movie out there. If you seek out the digital version in the United States, you’ll find that the cut available is the full 156 minute cut. But if you go to rent or purchase the digital release in Canada, you’ll find that the movie has been trimmed down to 120 minutes.

We don’t know exactly why the Canadian digital release is 36 minutes shorter than the U.S. digital release. On the Blu-ray.com forums, user alexroubaix checked out both versions and noted that the Canadian cut of the film is lacking subplots they described as the “January Jones abuse” and “land murder” subplots. It’s also worth noting that while the 156 minute cut is unrated and is said to feature “extreme and graphic bloody violence”, the 120 minute cut earned a 14A rating in Canada for “coarse language and violence”.

Starring Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Maika Monroe, God Is a Bullet follows detective Bob Hightower (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), who finds his ex-wife murdered and his daughter kidnapped by an insidious cult. Bob takes matters into his own hands and infiltrates the secretive cult to try to save his daughter. With the help of the cult’s only female victim escapee, Case Hardin (Maika Monroe), Bob and Case go down the rabbit hole with The Ferryman to save his daughter and find closure for Case from the cult – and its maniacal leader – that took so much away from her.

Monroe and Coster-Waldau are joined in the cast by January Jones, David Thornton, Paul Johannson, Johnathan Tucker, Ethan Suplee, Garret Wareing, Brendan Sexton III, Virginia Cassavetes, and Chloe Guy, with Jamie Foxx as The Ferryman and Karl Glusman as the cult leader.

God Is a Bullet was produced by Don Allen and Patriot Pictures’ Michael Mendelsohn. Kim H. Winther, Santiago Garcia Galvan, and Jim Steele are co-producers. Sidney Kimmel, Chuck Pacheco, Paul Johansson, and Natalie Perrotta serve as executive producers. Mendelsohn’s Union Patriot Capital Management handled the financing. XYZ Films represents worldwide sales. The Patriot Pictures and Union Patriot Capital Management team includes Anne Jordan, ESQ and Ryan Webb of Greenberg and Glusker.

Our own Tyler Nichols gave the 156 minute cut of God Is a Bullet a 7/10 review.
