Godzilla: KOTM director shares storyboard for unmade Mothra in-credit scene!

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Director Michael Dougherty's GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS was a fun time at the movies, even if the film was more than a bit flawed. Despite that, one of the highlights was most definitely the big-budget realization of fan-favorite Mothra! However, SPOILERS she was done a bit dirty in the film, being unceremonious killed by villain King Ghidorah during the climax (so clumsily done, in fact, I wasn't even sure she had died).

It was slightly alleviated, though, when there was a quick flash of a newspaper clipping during the closing credits (with a badass cover of Blue Oyster Cult's "Godzilla" by System of a Down's Serj Tankian playing over it) about a new egg found, that was supposed to foreshadow her eventual return.

However, Dougherty recently revealed the storyboards for a sequence that would've made that reveal much more explicit, involving twin sisters Dr. Ilene Chen and Dr. Ling Chen (both played by Zhang Ziyi), finding said egg. Now you can even see the whole storyboard in its entirety (as well as snippets of the script) on his official Instagram account below:

I personally would've preferred this, as it would make that plot point more clear, and connect the mythology of the original films with the updated version for the more recent ones. But I can understand if budget/time constraints were an issue.

Meanwhile, you can next see Godzilla in GODZILLA VS. KONG, still schedule to hit theaters November 19th…though we'll keep you updated if there are any delays.

So what do you guys think? Any fans of GODZILLA: KOTM? And if so, would this scene have made the film better or worse? Either way, sound off below!
