If GODZILLA‘s origins aren’t made perfectly clear in Gareth Edwards’ mega-budget re-imagining next summer, they will be in a prequel. Prequel comic, that is. Legendary Pictures announced today that they will be unveiling GODZILLA: AWAKENING on May 7, a week in advance of the film’s May 16th release.

Edwards himself helped make the announcement in a video, which you can see below. Of course, no details are available at this time, other than it’s set decades before the movie. The book will be written by Greg Borenstein and Max Borenstein (screenwriter of the forthcoming film).

GODZILLA will open wide on May 16, 2014 and stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Bryan Cranston, David Strathairn, Sally Hawkins, Juliette Binoche, Akira Takarada, Victor Rasuk, C.J. Adams, and Ken Watanabe.
