In director Mike Doughtery's upcoming film GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS, a sequel to Gareth Edwards' 2014 GODZILLA, the titular kaiju will be facing off with a trio of popular creatures from the Japanese GODZILLA films: Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah. Now that the film's release date is just five months away, the marketing campaign is picking up steam with the release of a new trailer and a batch of posters. Earlier this week we saw a poster that features Godzilla himself, and now Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah have each gotten their own poster. These can be seen below.
Written by Dougherty, his KRAMPUS co-writer Zach Shields, and GODZILLA / KONG: SKULL ISLAND writer Max Borenstein, GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS stars Millie Bobby Brown, Vera Farmiga, Ken Watanabe, Sally Hawkins, Kyle Chandler, Zhang Ziyi, Aisha Hinds, Charles Dance, Thomas Middleditch, O'Shea Jackson Jr., Randy Havens, Jonathan Howard, Anthony Ramos, Bradley Whitford, and Elizabeth Ludlow, with Jason Liles, Richard Dorton, and Alex Maxson providing the motion capture performances for the three heads of King Ghidorah.
The story follows
the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species thought to be mere myths rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.
I was underwhelmed by the 2014 GODZILLA film and disappointed that the title character had such little screen time. GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS sounds like it's going to be more along the lines of the sort of Godzilla movie I want to see. Speaking with Total Film recently, Dougherty said this about his approach to making the movie:
We have a lot of monsters. I think Gareth [Edwards] had a lot of fun playing cat-and-mouse and I love the slow-build he created. But we definitely take the gloves off for this film. No holding back."
Godzilla will be seen battling Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah on the big screen when GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS is released on May 31, 2019.
