Ugh! Did someone turn on the heat? I could swear that I set my thermostat to cool. Oh, never mind. It’s just Anthony Hayes’ Gold trailer screwing with my head.

An official trailer for Gold starring Zac Efron (The Greatest Showman, Baywatch) has blown in from the east that will make you taste dirt and leave you feeling delirious from heatstroke. In Gold, Efron stars as a man who discovers a massive gold nugget in the middle of a desert. After volunteering to stay with the treasure while his partner leaves to get the right equipment to pull it from the ground, the man encounters everything from deadly weather to deadlier humans that want him dead.

The Gold trailer provides an intense look at the upcoming film, which is scheduled to arrive in Australian cinemas on January 13, 2022. As of this moment, the film has yet to secure a North American release date.

Does anyone remember when it was considered trendy to dunk on Zac Efron? Well, look at him now. Traveling the world, looking all fine, and taking on some outstanding roles. For my money, this Gold trailer is really selling him as a dramatic actor who’s capable of so much more than people gave him credit for some years ago. I think this movie looks unforgiving, and I can’t even begin to imagine what it must have been like to film something in a location as harsh as the desert depicted in the new trailer.

Here’s the official synopsis for Gold:

“When two drifters traveling across a deserted wasteland stumble across the biggest gold nugget ever found, the dream of immense wealth and greed takes hold. The discovery soon becomes problematic when they realize a large part of the nugget is buried underground. They hatch a plan to protect and excavate the gold, with one man leaving to secure the necessary equipment. The other man remains and must endure the harsh desert elements while battling suspicion he has been abandoned to his own fate.

Two-way radios keep them in contact, and with hours and eventually days of dead airtime in between each communication the stranded man begins to run out of supplies. Water is scarce, food even more so. His plans to protect the gold are interrupted by two strangers who may change the course of the men’s plans.”

Directed by Hayes from a script he co-wrote with Polly Smith, Gold is produced by Hayes via his Rogue Star Pictures studio alongside Deeper Water Films’ John Schwarz and Michael Schwarz. Andrew Mann, Peter Touche, Simon Williams, Paul Wiegard, Will Clarke, Andy Mayson, Nick Forward, and Mike Runagall are executive producing. Gold also stars Susie Porter (Cargo, East West 101), and Anthony Hayes (Strangers, Total Control).

What do you think of today’s Gold trailer? I’m really hoping this gets a North American release date soon because I really want to see it. Let us know what you think in the comments section below.
