Remember back in January, when I told you all about the possibility of a BIOSHOCK movie? Well things have been quiet since then… until now!
Variety is breaking the huge news that BIOSHOCK will indeed be coming to the big screen, via blockbuster director Gore Verbinski!
If Verbinski’s name doesn’t ring a bell… where have you been? The man is the genius behind all three PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN movies and THE RING, among a few others. I’m pretty sure those credits speak for themselves, obviously showing Verbinski knows what he’s doing when it comes to big time movies.
And that’s exactly what BIOSHOCK is designed to be. Universal are the ones behind this adaptation, which had several suitors apparently. BIOSHOCK follows a cast-away in Rapture, an underwater Utopia torn apart by civil war. Caught between powerful forces, and hunted down by genetically modified “splicers” and deadly security systems, he has to come to grips with a deadly, mysterious world filled with powerful technology and fascinating characters.
Verbinski will also be producing with John Logan penning the script. During this pre-production period, Verbinski has also been in constant contact with the game’s creative director, Ken Levine, although Levine doesn’t have an official title in regards to the film. Verbinski had the following to say about the project:
“I think the whole utopia-gone-wrong story that’s cleverly unveiled to players is just brimming with cinematic potential. Of all the games I’ve played, this is one that I felt has a really strong narrative.”
This has all the markings of a great flick. Verbinski wants to start production as soon as the script is finalized. There’s no inkling of a release date yet, but it’s almost sure to be released after the game’s publisher, Take-Two, release BIOSHOCK 2 in 2009.
