Gremlins 3 (3D) not in development, says original writer Chris Columbus

Damn, and I thought yesterday’s release push back announcements were a bummer!

And as truly disappointed as you may have been over such news, at least we’ll still be able to watch said flicks when they finally do see the light of day. GREMLINS 3 (3D) however? Not so fast!

Remember about a week ago when our High Life swilling Ammon titillated you with thoughts of Joe Dante possibly rockin’ a third GREMLINS film? In the 3rd dimension no less?

Well According to i09, who recently shot the breeze with original GREMLINS scribe Chris Columbus, a third GREMLINS picture is NOT in development at this point. In fact, until he was cornered by the sci-fi geeks, he nor Steven Spielberg had even heard of such a project. What the shite?

“Maybe it’s going on behind our backs,” Columbus joked, adding to Coming Soon: “It would be fun to go back and revisit (them)” but that he “think(s) it’s impossible to recreate in a CGI environment.”

Delving deeper, Columbus put it frankly:

“I think it will inevitably lose some of its charm. Those are edgy Muppets in a sense and you don’t want to lose that sense of anarchy that those gremlins had, because behind the scenes are 25 puppeteers making them to come to life.”

Ya know what, I actually tend to agree with the man. Not that I don’t wanna see a new GREMLINS movie, I just think an overly CG rendering or a 3D version would rely too heavily on a technology completely foreign to the spirit of original films. In fact, I’d go the other way entirely, strip down the technology and return to old school puppetry and rudimentary effects work. I think going more retro than futuristic (technologically speaking) would be most beneficial in this day and age of glossy, excessively polished visuals. I dunno, just spit-balling here folks!

What do ya think?
