Alfonso Cuaron’s much-anticipated sci-fi feature GRAVITY has had a lot publicized about its initial development (mostly its casting), but in the months since filming has begun, we’ve only heard scattered talk about the truly ambitious nature of the making of the project.
But today, filmmaker and Cuaron chum Guillermo del Toro was given a chance to talk (courtesy of MTV) about this friend’s project and how GRAVITY seems to be treading new and incredible ground in terms of filmmaking itself:
“What is incredible about what they did is, they talked to David Fincher, they talked to Jim Cameron, I connected Jim and Alfonso for that. And what Alfonso is trying is so insane. And Jim said, well, look, you’re about five years into the future… it’s too early to try anything that crazy. And they did it!
I think [Alfonso] would kill me if I reveal [what they’re doing], and in time it will be so publicized. But I think that in the same way that he pushed the narrative in Children of Men… Alfonso and Emmanuel Lubezki are absolutely pushing a new boundary in filmmaking, completely mind-blowing. The way they’re making this film will I think forever change certain types of productions. The engineering and the ingenuity of the machines they’ve created to film that way is fantastic. I’m amazed at Alfonso in the last few movies because he’s completely transformed himself.
It’s incredibly well calculated and very human. Incredibly human. But Kubrikian in precision.”
GRAVITY – starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney – was recently given the prime and very awards-friendly release date of November 21, 2012 (a sign that Warner Bros. is confident in the film’s Oscar chances?). The story follows a lone survivor of a space mission to repair the Hubble telescope and her desperate attempt to return home to her child.
