I thought HAIRSPRAY was a modest enough hit for New Line – not overwhelmingly successful but not a giant bomb either – that they would be happy with the movie and move on to other movies based on musicals based on movies. Nope. New Line (now housed at Warner Bros.) has hired HAIRSPRAY creator John Waters to right a treatment for HAIRSPRAY 2, which the studio hopes will be ready for release in July 2010. Trouble is, the film’s cast – which included John Travolta, Michelle Pfeiffer, Zac Efron, Christopher Walken and James Marsden – never had a sequel clause build into their contracts. So that means all new deals will have to be reached that will very likely (especially in Travolta’s case) but much richer than the first time around. That said, the studio isn’t looking at pulling a Rachel Dawes and hopes to bring the entire cast back. Director Adam Shankman and songwriters Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman are already aboard though, which is certainly a good start. The question is, if they build it, will they come? Is anyone sufficiently interested in a HAIRSPRAY sequel? We shall see…
